Otoplasty is a surgical method of eliminating congenital and acquired defects in the auricles. It is performed in case of excessively large/small ears, everted ears, unattractive form of the auricles as well as in case of partial or complete absence of the external part of the ear. Correction is carried out in two directions: aesthetic (mainly to correct the defects) and reconstructive (restoration of the auricle).

At the GRACE Centre, the newest equipment and specialised surgeons in otoplasty following the European recommendations make it possible to carry out an effective correction even in case of massive injuries and defects of the auricle; the operation is absolutely safe, effective, and conducted with minimal injuries taking into account the patient’s desires.

What is the lower otoplasty?
Otoplasty makes it possible to correct the auricles in case of their anatomical defects. During the operation, cartilaginous and soft tissues of the auricles are corrected. This surgery is also indicated in children and adolescents who may develop psychological disorders due to congenital defects.

Duration of operation: 40-120 minutes

Rehabilitation: 2-3 weeks

Our approach to otoplasty:

  • A most natural new-made form of ears taking into account the physiological characteristics of a patient.
  • Unique 3D equipment to create an accurate 3D model after operation.
  • Increased attention to the safety of our patients.
  • Reduction of rehabilitation period 2-3 times in comparison with other clinics.

Medical indications

  • Everted ears.
  • Asymmetrical ears.
  • The incorrect shape of the auricles.
  • Insufficient development of auricles.

Psychological and other reasons

  • The need to eliminate the consequences of excessive piercing.
  • Dissatisfaction with the shape of the ears.

Otoplasty in children
If necessary, the operation is carried out even in children up to one year when correction of the rudimentary auricle is required.

How is the operation performed in children?

In this case, the necessary cartilaginous tissue is taken from the rib area. The operation to eliminate eversed ears in children is best to be performed at preschool age. By the age of six, the ear cartilage is completely formed, it becomes flexible enough so that the surgeon can give the ears an aesthetically correct shape. This operation allows the child to avoid being offended by the classmates in the future and, as a result, avoid serious psychological trauma and complexes.

Working with young children at the age of six, the GRACE specialists guarantee a further harmonious development of the ears in accordance with the child’s growth process.

How is otoplasty conducted?
The aesthetic plastic surgery involves changing the shape of the ear and cutting the ear cartilage. If necessary, the cartilage is shifted to the desired position. Further, special stitches are applied to fix a new form of the cartilage.

Everted ears are corrected with a small incision which is done at the level of the natural fold of the skin located behind the ear.

If there are indications, the excessive cartilage is removed and a special internal stitch is put. The scar after this manipulation is located in the ear fold and is almost invisible.

Self-preparation for surgery

  • 14 days before surgery, you should stop taking hormones and aspirin-containing drugs. If you cannot follow this recommendation, it is necessary to inform your surgeon about the systematic intake of these medications. Also, you should quit smoking or minimise it up to 2 cigarettes a day.

  • In the evening before surgery, you should not take any food.

Also, attention should be paid to adequate rest and balanced nutrition. In some cases, the intake of vitamins or, in the case of serious operations, preparations containing iron are prescribed.

Potential complications
Potential otoplasty complications include a headache, numbness in the ears, and the soft tissue swelling in the area of the postoperative wound. At that, even in case of serious complications, otoplasty does not affect the acuity of hearing.

The ten-year experience of the GRACE Centre doctors who use the high-quality technologies and medications and pay increased attention to safety minimise the likelihood of the above-mentioned risks at GRACE.

Detailed consultation is the key to a successful operation
The duration of the initial consultation at GRACE lasts, on average, for 40-50 minutes. This time is enough for us to hear and deeply understand all the needs and desires of a patient. During the consultation, we always strive to help our patients to create the correct expectation about otoplasty. We will reconstruct the exact 3D-simulation of the new auricles and simulate different variations of their final appearance using a unique equipment Vectra ХТ 3D according to a patient’s desires. Within 15 minutes, the patients will be able to see how their ears will look like after the operation and make corrections according to their preferences.
