Sclerotherapy is the most common method of spider vein treatment. This is an anaesthesia-free injectable method of treatment of varicose vein disease of the lower extremities, namely spinder and thread veins.

Scleroobliteration involves the sclerosant (a special chemical substance) insertion into the vessel lumen, which causes its inner layer chemical damage and the subsequent closure of the lumen. Subsequently, the vessel is sclerosing. This method allows closing a vein of almost any diameter.
Sclerotherapy is the most effective in regard to small veins and capillaries. It is called microsclerotherapy. There is liquid and foam sclerotherapy. The choice of sclerosant type of administration and its concentration is made by a phlebologist.

Duration: 15 minutes to 1 hour.

Rehabilitation: After sclerotherapy, you need to actively walk wearing compression garments for at least 40 minutes. Work capacity is not disturbed. Duration of compression garments (knee socks, stockings) use depends on the diameter of the treated veins.

Our approach to sclerotherapy:

  • Obligatory vein duplex ultrasound.
  • We mostly perform scleroobliteration in case of telangiectasia and reticular varicose veins (microsclerotherapy).
  • In case of large areas with reticular varicose veins and telangiectasias, sclerosing is performed in several sessions (3-4 with an interval of 7-10 days). Further, there is an interval of about 1 month.
  • We always discuss treatment time with patients to have enough time in reserve for aesthetic rehabilitation.
  • During sclerotherapy, we use both liquid, and foam type of sclerosant.

Medical indications:

  • Microsclerotherapy (spider veins, reticular varicose veins) is performed on aesthetic indications.
  • Sometimes, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy can be used to close perforating vein in the area of trophic changes of a shin.

  • Liquid sclerosant
  • Foam sclerosan
  • Microsclerotherapy (sclerosing of spider veins and thread veins)
  • Echosclerotherapy (ultrasound-guided sclerosing of trunk veins).

Preparation for the surgery:

  • It is necessary to inform the doctor about the intake of hormonal drugs (contraceptives, oestrogens).
  • It is necessary to stop taking anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, aspirin etc.) 3 days before the treatment.
  • It is necessary to quit smoking and drinking alcohol.
  • It is necessary to take a hygienic shower, to wash legs with a regular soap, not to perform epilation, not to apply creams and lotions.
  • It is necessary to have appropriate compression garments, comfortable shoes and clothes with you.

Specific aspects of the postoperative period:

  • After the end of sclerotherapy, an active 40-minute walk in compression knee socks or stockings is necessary.
  • Duration of compression depends on sclerosed veins. In case of microsclerotherapy, it lasts from several days to several weeks.
  • Daily monitor activity (at least 1-hour walk).
  • It is not allowed attending steam bath or sauna for 1-2 months. It is necessary to limit thermal procedures.

Complete rehabilitation:
After sclerotherapy sessions, aesthetic results will be visible in a while. It can take from several weeks to several months.

Consultation before the surgery:
The consultation takes about one hour. It involves as follows: ultrasound diagnostics, discussion of surgical indications, surgical extent and special aspects of postoperative period with phlebologist. The doctor examines your disease history, previous traumas and allergic reactions.
